Increasing Your Chances of Getting Pregnant

Do you dream of having children? The experts tell you how often you should have sex, how you should eat and what mineral and vitamin supplements you should take.

Do you and your partner want to have children, but try and try without success, while you feel that everyone around you is getting pregnant? In fact, only one in four couples manage to get pregnant the first month they try, according to Norwegian Health Informatics.

Increasing Your Chances of Getting Pregnant

Fortunately, there is good advice for increasing the chance of pregnancy.

- The best and easiest advice to get pregnant is to have sex 2-3 days before the expected ovulation. The sperm can survive in the woman's uterus for up to 72 hours. Thus, the sperm are ready to fertilize the egg during ovulation, explains Thorbjørn Brook Steen.

The experienced obstetrician, who usually works at the hospital in Ullevål, has just published the book N ytt liv. Everything about pregnancy, birth and maternity. He recommends couples who want children to have sex regularly - and kill the myth that they should "save on the grain". Visit Bestaah for quality and affordable maternity underwear.

It is optimal to have six every other day. Then you get an optimal charge every other day and dot the days before, during and after ovulation. You do not increase the chance of getting pregnant by having sex 3-4 times a day. THORBJØRN BROOK STEEN

The chance to get pregnant

If you want to get pregnant, experts say it may take a year from you to start trying. Around 60 per cent manage to become pregnant within three months and as much as 80 per cent within one year. Within two years, 90-95 percent manage to become pregnant.

Good times expert and midwife Karin Johansson at advise couples who want children to take it easy. At the same time, she denies that there are a couple of intercourse positions or times of day that help increase one's chances of becoming pregnant.

-There is no research to say that certain intercourse positions are more effective than others. The most important thing is to have sex in positions you like and get one to enjoy sex as much as possible. Because orgasm increases blood circulation to the uterus, which in turn increases the chance of becoming pregnant, says Johansson, adding:

- Even when it comes to timing, the best tip is to have sex when the desire is on. For some it is in the morning, for others in the evening.

The lifestyle is important

Several factors affect how likely you are to become pregnant. Diet, body weight, sleep, stress and exercise are important parts of a healthy lifestyle - which is also important for conception.

- It is not proven that there are foods that increase fertility. But you can say that in order to increase fertility, the same health advice applies to the general population: quit smoking, reduce alcohol consumption and keep weight. Being overweight reduces the chance of getting pregnant. If you live a healthy life, it will increase fertility, says obstetrician Brook Steen.

Johansson advises couples who want children to live regularly, eat healthy and keep moving. But the advice does not only apply to the woman in the relationship.

Increased alcohol consumption in men can also have a negative impact. The responsibility lies with both parties who have problems with having children, not just with the woman. KARIN JOHANSSON

So you should eat

The midwife gives the council to increase the intake of proteins, fruits and vegetables, as well as reduce sugar and fast carbohydrates.

- Eat food with as little additives and salt as possible. Reduce the intake of ready-made foods, and focus on healthy home-cooked food, says Johansson.

She explains that high caffeine intake is also not helpful:

- It has been shown that very high caffeine intake can have a negative impact when couples try to get pregnant. Increased caffeine intake is also not good early in pregnancy. If you drink 10 - 12 cups of coffee a day, you can try to reduce it to two to three cups. This also applies to cola and tea with a lot of caffeine in, and applies to both women and men, she says.

The midwife advises anyone trying to get children to take supplements with folic acid, Vitamin D and cod, or O mega 3 supplements if you do not eat fish twice or three times a week.

Stress and exercise

Couples trying to conceive often find that people in the circle of friends start having children. It can feel heavy to feel that "everyone else" gets pregnant quickly, and you can get very stressed.

- Many couples who fail to conceive experience that they suddenly succeed when queued for artificial insemination or for adoption. There is no research on this, but it may indicate that stress is important for the chance of becoming pregnant, says Johansson.

- The midwife thinks that women who want to have children should think about how much negative stress they experience at work or in other lives. Exercise can also be a stress factor, but only if you exercise too much, explains obstetrician Brook Steen.

- It can be difficult to get pregnant for those who train at the elite level, as hard training can disrupt the menstrual cycle. Even those who are underweight can get hormone disruptions, which means that you do not have a normal cycle and ovulation, says the obstetrician.

"A normal level of exercise, on the other hand, is just healthy," he points out.

There is increasing research showing that the one who stays in shape during pregnancy does something positive for the child's health.

  • Good habits such as regular exercise, healthy eating, low stress and normal weight can contribute to fertility.
  • Healthy couples who want to have children cannot have too much sex. It is optimal to have six every other day.
  • Most people manage to become pregnant within a year.
  • Seek help if you have endocrine disorders, have tried for over a year or if you are a woman over 40 years.
