In collaboration with the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, researchers at the Sahlgrenska Academy have studied data on nearly 51,000 pregnant women. The children, in turn, have followed up for eight years. It turned out that children whose mothers consumed caffeine during pregnancy are more likely to become overweight in school age.

For example, a survey at the age of five shows that the number of overweight and obese children was over five percent more in the group where mothers had consumed the most caffeinated beverages during their pregnancy, compared to the mothers who had the lowest caffeine intake.

Risk even with moderate coffee drinking

The Swedish Food Agency's recommendations state that pregnant women should not consume more than 300 milligrams of caffeine per day, which corresponds to three cups of coffee or six cups of black tea. But according to the study, an increased risk was also seen in the children whose mothers had followed the recommendations.

Chocolate, energy drinks and other caffeine sources were also included in the study.

- In the Nordic countries, coffee is most important, while women in England, for example, receive most of their caffeine via black tea. Looking at the younger group, it is more about energy drinks. It is a strength that we have with different sources in the study, and we find a similar relationship between intake of caffeine from these different sources and children's growth, says Verena Sengpiel and continues:
