The study included 3,389 pregnant women from 153 maternal health clinics and 468 non-pregnant subfertile women from 10 fertility clinics in central Sweden.

Decreased fertility

It turned out that 74 percent of pregnant women estimated their pregnancies to be fairly or very well planned. Yet, only a third of all pregnant women took folic acid a month before conception. Furthermore, 17 percent used tobacco daily and 11 percent drank alcohol every week.

Among non-pregnant women, 13.2 percent consumed tobacco daily, 13.6 percent drank more than three cups of coffee per day, and 11.6 percent consumed more than two glasses of alcohol per week, which is not recommended.
